What are some of your main goals within the game over the next 5 years?
To play in the WHL and commit to an NCAA team in 5 years.
Why are these your goals? Why are they important to you? What would it mean to achieve them?
These are my goals because they put me in the best spot to achieve my end goal, which is making the NHL. These goals are important to me because they are big stepping stones on the way to my end goal. If I achieve these goals, that would mean to me that I am on the right track to my end goal.
What separates you as a player and person? What are some areas requiring work? How do you continue to get better?
What separates me as a player is my hockey IQ, my drive, compete, first pass, skating and shot. As a person, I feel I try to make choices in my daily life that shows I care about others. On my team I bring leadership and positive energy by encouraging my teammates, leading by example and maturity. I want to continue to get physically stronger and improve the speed of my forward skating. I believe you can always get better at everything. I am dedicated to working out on my own and at the gym with my trainer everyday of the week. I get faster by working on and off ice to improve my foot speed.
What do you bring to any team you play for? What could a coach expect from you if they selected you for their roster?
I bring leadership, energy and maturity to a team. I believe in leading by example and doing the small things (picking up pucks, finishing checks, listening carefully, connecting teammates to each other). On ice, I bring good defensive play and offensive ability in the O-zone. I also add a physical presence to any roster I am on. I have good decision making on special teams. A coach that selects me can expect to get a player that will work hard day in and out with consistency and a good attitude.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports career? (Community, team, success, etc)
One impact that I feel I can already have is giving back to my community by helping younger hockey players develop. I am excited to take part in my team’s mentoring program next year where we get to help on ice with younger teams each week. Later in my career I would like to maybe give back by donating to charities. One charity I would like to support is the Stollery Children’s Hospital since I have been a patient there when I was younger. When I am finished playing at the highest level I can achieve. I would like to start my own youth hockey program either as an academy or a skills development program. The impact that I want to have on my team is that when I am done playing on that team I am remembered as a leader that made people feel good about themselves and brought people together in a positive way. If I am able to achieve these goals, this would be what success looks like for me.
What do you believe separates the best players in the world? What attributes/intangibles define them?
The work ethic, determination and drive is what separates the best players in the world from other players. They are willing to go the extra distance and put in the work, even when they don’t feel like it. They have a positive and growth mindset and know there is always another level to achieve. They are never satisfied and always pushing for more.
Favorite thing about the game (on or off ice)?
Off the ice, my favorite part of the game are the people you meet on the journey and the experiences that I have had through playing hockey. I also love the gym and pushing myself to be better. On ice, I love the fun and excitement I get out of playing the game. I love scoring, making big hits and making good passes and setting teammates up for a goal.
