What are some of your main goals within the game over the next 5 years?
1. Play junior A hockey in Canada
2. Play in the NCAA
3. Make a living playing hockey
4. Become the best goalie possible
Why are these your goals? Why are they important to you? What would it mean to achieve them?
I’ve dreamt of playing hockey professionally my whole life. The goals I have set I feel like are steppingstones to my ultimate goal which is to make a living playing hockey and therefore doing what I love. Very few people get to do something they love every single day. I feel privileged in that way. Every single day I work hard at achieving my goals of playing hockey professionally. That to me is the real gift, going to the gym, going for a run, waking up at 6 in the morning to practice that’s the journey and man do I love the journey. The goals mean that I can keep doing what I love. By achieving my goal of playing junior A hockey for example I get to play hockey and continue to grow and learn. That’s why my goals are important. To achieve these goals would mean the world. To achieve my goals and to see all the hard work pay of that’s the real goal. I truly can’t describe how much it would mean to me.
What separates you as a player and person? What are some areas requiring work? How do you continue to get better?
What separates me is my work ethic. I truly believe that I work the hardest of any goalie my age. My dedication and love for the sport is also a separating factor. I truly love getting up in the morning even just for a quick power skate. I am a very detail-oriented person and spend all my free time learning about the position. I am dedicated to my craft, and I am never satisfied with where I am at. These things are what make me excel in hockey as well as in school and other areas of my life.
As a person I’m very caring and loving. I have a small group of close-knit friends that I enjoy spending time with, including my girlfriend of two years. I have a very close relationship with my family (including extended family) and I enjoy spending time with them. I am very empathic and caring towards people and I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt and to fight for the underdog
My dedication and focus can sometimes be perceived as arrogance or lack of interest in others, however this is not the case and is something I am aware of and working on. I have very high moral standards and expectations for my abilities and I generally expect people to meet these same standards, which can at times lead to unrealistic expectations but I am learning to be more open and accepting that not everyone shares my priorities. I am generally quiet and can be somewhat introverted, which can make large groups of new people somewhat intimidating, however I feel like I am getting much better at adapting to these situations and have come to really enjoy social arrangements with the team or friends at school.
I like to read and have found several books that have really helped in my personal development. One example is the book “Atomic Habits” which really resonates with me. It has helped me develop small habits that help me progress towards larger goals. I read daily, do pushups, work on being social daily and so on through the use of habits. Habits I believe to be very important. Curiosity also is very important both on the ice and of the ice. I’m always looking for things to improve I’m never satisfied. I also seek the support of others including goalie coaches, physical trainers, physio therapists, etc that help develop me as an athlete and player.
What do you bring to any team you play for? What could a coach expect from you if they selected you for their roster?
The desire to be the best. I promise to outwork everybody and, in that way, push my teammates to be better. I bring intensity both in games but also in practice. I’m extremely dedicated and I certainly never give up. A coach can expect extreme focus and high intensity hard work. Beyond that I care for my teammates. I want the team to excel with me and I’m therefor very competitive both of the ice but also on the ice. I’m compassionate and I want everybody to be part of the team.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports career? (Community, team, success, etc)
I want to be exciting to watch. Hockey is one of the most underappreciated sports in my opinion especially in Denmark where I have played a lot of my career. I want to continue to grow the game in Denmark and to prove that it is possible for kids in smaller hockey markets to make a living playing hockey. I also love coaching kids and have helped coaching several youth teams and camps, which is also something I see myself continuing in the future so I can spread the joy of hockey.
What do you believe separates the best players in the world? What attributes/intangibles define them?
I truly believe that hard work and dedication are the two most important factors that separates the elites from the rest. I respect players like Sidney Crosby, Carey Price and Connor McDavid who are not only elite athletes with amazing skill but they also appear to be responsible and humble people off the ice who are excellent ambassadors for the sport. They seem to be great leaders and great people.
Favorite thing about the game (on or off ice)?
My favorite thing about the game is improving. I love going to the rink working on something in practice and then seeing it pay off in games. I love the process the early mornings and I just love dedicating myself to the craft. I also just love playing the game and spending time with friends (and family) on the ice. I have been lucky enough to be able to spend many hours on the ice with my dad, my uncle, my cousins and my friends and I can’t think of any place I’d rather be than on the ice.
