What are some of your main goals within the game over the next 5 years?
One of my goals is to be a student athlete and to use hockey as a vehicle to continue my athletic and academic career. I plan to go to university to earn a degree and play hockey at a Division I level. Allowing me to play hockey and go to school gives me the best of both worlds which is success in my mind.
Why are these your goals? Why are they important to you? What would it mean to achieve them?
These are my goals because it makes me a well-rounded person. I know they are important because hockey doesn’t last forever, injuries occur and career focus changes over time. Having an education in conjunction with playing hockey will give me options and opportunities for future careers.
What separates you as a player and person? What are some areas requiring work? How do you continue to get better?
What separates me as a player or person is persistence. I continually work my hardest at what I do. I believe that will accounts as much as skill in all the things I do. I continue to get better through the support of my family that surrounds me with people and resources I need. Continuing to be better is not taking these things for granted and putting them into practice at all times. Some areas that require my attention is to remain focused and trusting the system when things don’t quite go my way or work out as planned. I continue to get better by communicating with the people that support me like my coach, teammates, family and friends to get that support and advice to help me through. From there I need to apply that feedback, work hard and stay positive.
What do you bring to any team you play for? What could a coach expect from you if they selected you for their roster?
What is bring to any team that I play for is the fact that I am consistent. A coach can expect me to bring my best to every game mentally and physically. I am a player that can be relied on each night and one that communicates and seeks the resources to help me when the situation changes because of injury or anything else.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports career? (Community, team, success, etc)
I want to achieve the highest level in my sports career as possible and in turn give back to my team and community as much as possible. Success comes from all those factors around you like your parents, community that you are in, coaches, and teammates, etc. It is important to recognize all these factors and give back as much as you can to them whether is it volunteering in your community, being a supportive teammate or friend, or acknowledging the time and effort your team and coaches put into your success by working hard and doing your best.
What do you believe separates the best players in the world? What attributes/intangibles define them?
The best players in the world have a mindset and a confidence that they can be successful in any situation. They give beyond what is expected and do not complain or feel that situations are unfair. The best players will reflect and learn from each situation and practice them over and over when others are not. They don’t make excuses, they find a way to overcome.
Favorite thing about the game (on or off ice)?
One of my favourite things about hockey is the fact that each team that I have ever been on throughout my hockey career allows me to feel like I am a part of a family. The friendships and connections I have created with my teammates and coaches has been a valuable to me and will continue to have an impact on my life into the future no matter where I go.
