What are some of your main goals within the game over the next 5 years?
Over the next 5 years, my goal is to play collegiate hockey and through that, be able to expand my game even more and become a more well rounded player and person. I want to face challenges that teach me how to grow and overcome them, and be able to feel comfortable in a space where I will spend so much time. A place where I can get an education to support me later down the road.
Why are these your goals? Why are they important to you? What would it mean to achieve them?
These are my goals because since I began playing hockey in the elite stream, I developed to a point where I knew I would be capable of playing university hockey at some point. I want to play as long as I am able and the thought of playing in university has always been Super exciting. I have put my every day over the last many years into my training to attain it, so to see it pay off would mean so much to me.
What separates you as a player and person? What are some areas requiring work? How do you continue to get better?
I think the difference in me as an athlete VS as a person is that as an athlete, my identity lies in my performance, the role I play on a team, and the physical daily work put into everything. While who I am as a person encompasses those relationships within the team and separate aspirations outside the game. It involves my personal growths and how I handle challenges outside of hockey. Something I feel I need to work on is having that growth mindset not only in hockey, but in other aspects of my life as well, to help me develop a more rounded identity and keep my work life balance in check. I continue to work on this by being mindful of the way I approach situations outside of hockey, whether in academics or anything else, and to make sure I keep dedicated to the other parts of my life that will carry me well beyond my hockey career.
What do you bring to any team you play for? What could a coach expect from you if they selected you for their roster?
I bring my dedication and coach-ability to any team I play for. Being on the ice and doing what I love is something I look forward to every day, and I always take advantage of my time on the ice and go into training with an open mind, so that I can take any given feedback and work to improve, whether that feedback come from coaches, teammates, or myself. I am also a super supportive teammate and person on and off the ice, which I feel like in a team setting is so important to have a supportive and connected group because that’s how you keep open communication in a room which always leads to positive outcomes on and off ice.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports career? (Community, team, success, etc)
I want to have a positive impact for young players in the game, especially young female players. In the past, having the opportunity to coach younger players and watch them grow a love for the game was inspiring for me, and I wish to leave that same impact on them, and share the growing female game with young athletes finding their way into the hockey world. There is so much opportunity and I have learnt so much from my hockey career thus far, and I can only hope to inspire others to live that as well
What do you believe separates the best players in the world? What attributes/intangibles define them?
I think mindset and dedication separate the good from the great. I feel like the best players in the world have that ‘next gear’ or that extra drive that a lot of people don’t. They are able to excel in any situation and have that consistent push. The mental side also heavily applies, as they can thrive under pressure and push past mental blocks to focus on the next shift or the next steps in developing their game.
Favorite thing about the game (on or off ice)?
My favourite thing about the game is the relationships and life lessons learnt from it. Some of my closest friends have been made through playing hockey, and I feel like it is a result of having the same dedication and goal sets. I also feel that competition between teammates pushes you to improve and helps drive one another to their best level. It helps teach life lessons like time management, and mental strength when put in various situations, which will forever be valuable.
