What are some of your main goals within the game over the next 5 years?
My main goals within hockey in the next 5 years are to continue to push myself to get to “the next level” because there is always a higher level to reach. My ultimate goal is to achieve a NCAA commitment and scholarship and live the full student-athlete experience. I want to become an elite shut down defenseman (‘a wet blanket on opposing forwards’). I want to cement myself as a core player in a winning franchise and be the best player and teammate I possibly can.
Why are these your goals? Why are they important to you? What would it mean to achieve them?
These goals are important to me because post-secondary education is a cornerstone to building a rewarding career and playing high-level hockey as a path to achieve it is a unique and exciting way to achieve that. At the same time, discovering my highest ceiling as a player is something I’ve been pushing on my whole hockey career, and I believe that my ceiling can be NCAA level or higher if I continue to challenge myself to break through barriers and improve.
What separates you as a player and person? What are some areas requiring work? How do you continue to get better?
I’m more than just a hockey player, I’m an elite athlete, student and leader. I’ve built my reputation not just for what I can do on the ice, but also for my ability to work harder than anybody else, lead by example, and contribute positively to team culture on and off the ice. I am more mature, independent and organized than many people my age, partially as a result of living away from home and billeting for four years to pursue hockey at a higher level than what my hometown of Prince Rupert could offer. I have diverse interests, I’m a “straight A” student and recognize hockey is only one chapter of my life story.
On the ice, I am a 6’3” fast skating, physical, lockdown defenseman who can log heavy minutes and be a rock at the back end. I’m very coachable, have a strong ability to listen and learn, and my intelligence and on-ice vision translates to being able to adapt to the game in the moment. While I have consistently been a key factor in driving play, possession and scoring chances when I’m on the ice, I need to continue to improve my offensive puck skills to thrive at higher levels. My strategy to continue improving is simple–work harder than everybody else each day in every workout and practice and be purposeful in what I’m seeking to improve in each one. I will seek feedback from my coaches and apply the notes. Pursuing opportunities to play at continuously higher levels gives me the opportunity to challenge my skill level and keep improving every year—and gives me confidence I will continue to develop and adjust to junior hockey and further.
What do you bring to any team you play for? What could a coach expect from you if they selected you for their roster?
I bring commitment and energy to any team I play for and treat my team as a family. I am very coachable, expect frank and honest feedback, and will work tirelessly to improve. I will do whatever is best for the team first and will step up to deliver the best chance to win no matter what role I am given. I am a leader and will keep the room positive in any situation as well as hold my teammates accountable on and off the ice. On the ice, I am a big, strong, fast, puck moving defenseman, that takes great pride in being consistent and dependable on every shift. I can be counted on to thrive on the ice in the biggest, toughest, high-pressure minutes, and who will give everything for my team.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports career? (Community, team, success, etc)
As a priority, I want to have a positive and memorable impact on my teammates, coaches, trainers, and everyone else in the locker room. Ultimately, team sports is about sharing an experience with people pursuing the same goals. Being remembered for achieving championship goals and winning banners is great, but I hope to also be remembered for my contributions along the way, on and off the ice. In our society, athletes are role models. As an athlete, I’ve learned I have the unique ability and opportunity to influence and support others—teammates, young fans, community members—and I have a responsibility to be positive, involved, interested and kind to the people around me.
What do you believe separates the best players in the world? What attributes/intangibles define them?
In my opinion, what separates the best players in the world is a combination of relentless work ethic, mental toughness, and consistency. They train harder than everyone else, stay composed under pressure, and perform at a high level every time they compete. Their deep understanding of the game, coachability, and hunger to improve make them stand out. Beyond skill, their intense competitiveness and natural leadership inspire those around them and elevate their entire team. I have these attributes and will continue to develop them to reach the highest level. I will also take these attributes with me to succeed in education and my career.
Favorite thing about the game (on or off ice)?
My favourite thing about the game on the ice is the intensity during a big game. I am a competitor. There is no other sport like hockey, just the way every player on the ice is putting their bodies on the line for their team. My favourite thing about the game off the ice is the bond you make with your teammates, and the friendships that you can create by sharing a common goal, training hard and going to war with the guys beside you.
